PDP chieftain kicks against advocates of zoning
A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Alh Adebisi Olopoenia has opposed the position of few so called elders of the party who were said to be proposing the zoning of the governorship seat to Ibadan area stressing that it was unconstitutional. Olopoeniyan argued that the move was against the constItution of the party as regards how to pick its governorship flag bearer. “We have a precedent because in Ekiti State, there was primaries and there was no insistence that the candidate must come from Ado Ekiti.Ditto for Osun state where the candidate comes from outside Osogbo, the state capital, the statement said. “In these two examples, there was no reference to either zoning or consensus because all the aspirants went to the field and there the governorship candidates emerged after the primaries”,it stated. He cautioned that it would be inimical for the victory of the party if some pockets of elders in the party could insist on an indigene of Ibadan as the governorship candidate of PDP without conducting primaries for all the aspirants of the party including all from outside Ibadan. He described as false, the claim that former speaker of the state House of Assembly,Alhaji Maroof Atilola,Chief Sunday Ogunlade, the PDP chairman in Oyo zone and Busari Moriyeba endorsed that the governorship candidate must come from Ibadan if PDP would win at the governorship election.
“It is crystal clear that these few so called elders are protecting and promoting the interest of Senator Teslim Folarin and any orchestrated plot to edge out Otunba Alao Akala from the primaries would fail.It is dangerous for our party”the PDP Chieftain warned. He called on the national leaders of PDP to abort any recourse to zoning and insist on conduct of primaries for all the aspirants whether they are from Ibadan,Ogbomoso,Ibarapa and Oke Ogun adding that Ibadan alone does not make up Oyo State. Olopoenia assured that if justice and fairness were followed without sectionalism and the best candidate emerged,PDP could be sure of victory in 2015 in Oyo. It commended the decision of the party leadership led by President Goodluck Jonathan to boost the morale of Senator Iyiiola Omisore through last Saturday election in Osogbo pointing out that the APC was jittery because of its looming defeat in the state.
