Oyo to create local council development areas
The Oyo State government is considering creating local council development areas, in addition to the 33 local government areas in the state. According to a top source close to the government, there have been pressures mounted by some elders of the state from all the geo-political zones on the governor to consider the creation of council areas, so as to accelerate developments in the state. According to the source, the state government had, about a year ago, commenced the process of creating the councils but had to abandon it due to political pressure. By the time the idea of crating the development councils was abandoned, said the source, it had reached an advanced stage as the council areas and headquarters had been identified. However, said the source, pressures on the governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, to reconsider the creation of the councils have been coming from political leaders whom the governor has high regards for. The political leaders, whom the source said recently met the governor at the Government House, had pleaded with the governor that the creation of the councils would accelerate developments in all the councils, as well as bring progress to the grassroots.
The leaders, drawn from the Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Oke-Oogun and Ibarapa zones, were said to have convinced the governor on the reason to go back to this idea.
The source, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the governor’s response to the leaders was positive as he urged them to sensitise their various communities on the exercise and give him feedbacks on the people’s disposition to the idea.
It will be recalled that the Ekiti State government had recently embarked on the process of creation of local council development areas.
