The police in Oyo State have arrested a “fake policeman”, Damilare Olajide (25), in Ibadan, the state capital. Olajide allegedly claimed to be a policeman attached to the Mokola Police Division and had been extorting money from commercial motorcyclists. He was arrested yesterday morning by detectives from Eleyele Police Division. Police spokesperson Olabisi Ilobanafor said there had been many complaints from motorcyclists on the illegal activities of a “policeman”. Ilobanafor said a policeman, who had been conniving with the suspect, had been dismissed and charged to court.
She said the suspect was arrested after “collecting money” from two motorcyclists, adding that N1,950 in N50 denomination was found on him. Olobanofor said the suspect was arrested for a similar offence three weeks ago and was charged to court, adding that the matter was pending in court. Olajide, who claimed to be a former student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, said he was lured into the crime by some policemen three months ago. He confessed to the crime, saying he collects between N200 and N300 from motorcyclists.
