In an effort to implement the OYOMESI’s agenda of bringing together learners, teachers, educators and businesses who are committed to improving the quality of education in the state, the Oyomesi Consortium has announced the maiden edition of the Oyomesi Festival of Learning.
This was announced recently at a press release at the Technical University, Ibadan. The press release by Dr Bisi Akin-Alabi, the Special Adviser to Gov. Abiola Ajimobi on Education had in attendance, The Vice-chancellor of the Technical University, Ibadan, Professor Ayobami Salami, The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adesola Ajayi, the Registrar, Mr. Alex Oladeji, Mr. Paul O’Callaghan Chief Executive Officer – WestAfricaENRG
The Festival of learning, according to Dr. Bisi Akin-Alabi, will be held from 29th of June to 5th of July 2018. The festival of learning, she further explained, will allow a wider audience of teachers, educators, and businesses to collaborate and network with each other, learn new approaches to classroom practices and leave full of ideas to inspire their pupils. It is an opportunity to market products and engage with other stakeholders, also attend and participate in various workshops that will take place during the festival.
“The event aims to promote learning as a lifelong activity and necessary for all. This is in support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Learning City Status conferred on Ibadan in October 2016, as such other regions in the state must become learning neighbourhoods whilst we strive to achieve the qualifying criteria for a UNESCO Learning City Progress Award”, she said.
Furthermore, as a part of the anniversary activities, the festival of learning will be hosting the Oyomesi 1st hackathon in a collaboration with the WestAfricaENRG, which is primarily a themed event aimed at students from the tertiary institutions, technology enthusiasts, and communities. Mr. Paul O’Callaghan Chief Executive Officer – WestAfricaENRG at the press release expressed his happiness at being part of the hackathon.
“This will be the first-ever hackathon on environmental issues in Nigeria and it is something I am very passionate about. We know that we are entering into the fourth industrial revolution of the globe which involves brains and technology. The technical industry specifically information technology will drive the revolution and with the abundance of talents in Nigeria, Nigeria is very well placed to leverage and leap for the lead in the industrial revolution in West Africa”, he said.
In addition, Dr. Bisi announced that The Oyomesi Compendium of Heroes (Issue 1) will be launched during the event to be published in June 2018. This is a compilation of concise but detailed information in book format about those (past and present) who have contributed to education in Oyo State.
The highlight of the week-long event will be the 2nd prime quality time with His Excellency, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and the implementation of the Oyomesi Character Education strand taggedPRIME-OYO of which the state Governor is the PRIME POSITIVE ROLE MODEL. Other PRIME OYO ROLE MODELS will be recognised and decorated at the event. These are people of repute who have excelled in their area of endeavour and/or who have contributed in no small measure to education in Oyo state.
