How Should Your Bed Be Positioned in a Bedroom?
When you want to be at your best, a good night’s sleep gives you an advantage. If your bed isn’t placed properly in your room, however, you may not get the rest that you require. Before you make a final decision on the best spot for your bed, there are several options to weigh and consider.
- Those who embrace the ancient Chinese art of feng shui believe that the placement of your bed has a direct and crucial relationship with the position of the bedroom door. Feng shui experts recommend placing the bed in the farthest position from the door, yet in a way that allows you to see the door easily from your sleeping position. At the same time, it’s important to place your bed in a spot that is not in direct alignment with the door due to the energy that enters through the doorway and affects your body while you sleep.
- Some smaller bedrooms, or those with several openings like closets, balcony doors and bathrooms may dictate the placement of the bed simply from the layout of the room. Depending on the size of your bed, there may be only one or two places where the bed fits easily. Most people prefer to place the head of the bed against the wall for ease of making it. A bed with one side along the wall can be difficult to make each day when you have to tuck the blankets down between the wall and the bed or pull the mattress out in order to make it.
- Windows can be a friend or a foe when it comes to bed placement. During the warmer months when you enjoy the feel of a fresh breeze and the sound of crickets while you fall asleep, position your bed underneath the windows and throw them open. On the other hand, during the winter months you may want to position your bed away from the windows, particularly if you live in a house with drafty windows or poor insulation. Choose an interior wall to position your bed against during these months.
- While some enjoy waking up to the feel of the sun streaming across their face, others find it abhorrent. If you enjoy the early morning sunshine, notice where the sun falls in the mornings and position your bed in its direct path. If you’d rather sleep in when possible, position your bed to be out of the sun’s path or in a direction that allows you to have your back to the light.
